Shabbat customarily begins with the lighting of candles. Although traditionally a woman’s mitzvah, candles can be lit by anyone. The idea is that the Jewish way of fighting negativity and evil is not to attack the darkness head on. You’ll never win. Instead light a candle – do a good deed. A little light pushes away a lot of darkness.
