I researched an Israeli company called Waze. It is a service that provides maps and gps directions specifically for drivers. The app creates a network of users that share information about road conditions as they drive. A user could be informed of an accident or a road obstruction before it comes into view which can keeps roads safer. Waze was bought by the American company Google in 2013 for $1.3 billion.
I interview my father Stanislav Libman. He was born and raised in the Soviet Union and did not leave the country until the early 90s to find a better life for his family. He left Belarus with his wife, young daughter, and pet poodle to come to Pennsylvania to his older brother's town. The Soviet Union was deeply anti-Semitic because they outlawed all religion at all. The Jewish culture, being as persistent and historic as it is did not easily give into this way of life. He told me when he was kid, his father Lev would take him for long drives to the countryside to secret Jewish owned farms where they blessed all their food and made it Kosher. My grandfather told my dad that his family has always kept kosher. Even during World War 2, my great grandfather would insist on only eating kosher food. Even if that meant going days without eating altogether. My grandfather Lev and my father were never Bar Mitzvah'd because of the difficult world they grew up in. They were forced to practice in secret. It wasn't until they came to America and I was born that my family has had the chance to raise a Jewish male. I was the first person in my family to be Bar Mitzvah'd. I look towards the sacrifices my ancestors made so that I can live on in this country being a proud Jewish person.
